! Data Rot !

By James A. McKane - © 2009 ==================================================================================

Data Rot is progressing every day of our computer lives! Basically, Data Rot is the loss of data through the aging process of the media - tapes, CDs, DVDs - and/or the loss of data caused by the unavailability of the computer program or machine that created the original. I'll bet you have an old LP record lying around somewhere but you don't have a turntable to play it on! Well, the same thing has happened to millions of computer users!

To preserve old data such as genealogies, digital photos, etc., we need to make new copies every few years to refresh the media on which they are stored. We, also, need to remember all of these copies to transfer them to the newest technology before the original technology disappears.

The CBS News video below provides additional background. However, if you do not have a hi-speed connection, you can read the CBS News story here.
